Melanoma Skin Cancer
The most serious and dangerous skin cance
Among all skin cancer type’s melanoma is less common type, but melanoma is the main cause of skin cancer related deaths. Malignant melanoma is a seriously dangerous type of skin cancer; it is due to uncontrolled growth of pigment cells, called melanocytes. Despite many years of intensive laboratory and clinical research, the sole effective cure for melanoma is surgical resection of the primary tumor before it achieves a *Breslow thickness greater than 1 mm.
When melanoma is confined to the outer layer of skin, it is curable in 90% of cases. But if melanoma is unchecked it can continue to spread to lymph and blood vessels, which increases the likelihood of its affecting distant sites in the body.
Individuals most at risk for melanoma tend to have a fair or freckled complexion, blond hair with blue, green or gray eyes, skin that burns easily, a history of sunburn, especially as a child or teenager, and a family history of melanoma.
Malignant melanoma accounts for 75% of all deaths associated with skin cancer. According to WHO, around 160,000 new cases of melanoma are diagnosed nationally every year, and Melanoma more frequent in males and Caucasians. It's because of Caucasian populations living in sunny climates than in other groups, and also WHO report about 48,000 melanoma related deaths occur worldwide per year.
* Breslow's depth is used as a prognostic factor in melanoma of the skin. It is a description of how deeply tumor cells have invaded.
